Forestry Bulldozer Selection by Indonesian Terrain: Peat Swamp, Steep Slope or Plantation Road?

Indonesia’s timber and plantation work does not happen on a flat, dry construction yard. It happens on peat that gives way under a boot, on skid trails cut up the side of a hill, and on access roads that wash out every wet season. The machine that wins on one of those grounds can stall on another — so the first question is not “which bulldozer” but “which ground.”

This guide walks through three Indonesian forestry terrains and the configuration that fits each, using two machines from our supply range: the HW18DT-BF mechanical forestry bulldozer (purpose-built for logging) and the HW22D 23-ton crawler bulldozer (our bulk earthmoving unit).

HW22D — 23-ton crawler bulldozer

Our high-volume earthmoving unit for land clearing and haul-road work.

Best for Land clearing, haul-road maintenance, overburden removal

Terrain 1 — Peat Swamp and Wetland Logging

Wet, worked-over peat is where most machines fail. The deciding number is ground pressure, not horsepower. The HW18DT-BF at 17,500 kg on 610 mm dry-land shoes puts down just 0.067 MPa — below the bearing capacity of most saturated logging ground, so it keeps moving where lighter wheeled equipment sinks and heavier machines churn the surface into a pit.

And when it does sink to the frame, the 150 kN hydraulic winch lets the operator anchor to a standing tree and pull the machine out under its own power — no crane, no second dozer, no lost day. For peat and wetland logging, the HW18DT-BF is the machine.

Terrain 2 — Steep Skid Trails and Slope Work

On hillside skid trails the risks are falling timber and getting stuck on a grade you cannot climb. Three features decide the day:

  • 8-leg logging canopy — distributes impact across eight members instead of four, enclosing the operator station on the sides where branches come down.
  • 150 kN winch — skids felled logs to the landing and self-recovers the machine on a failed grade.
  • 4,571 mm turning radius — matters on trails cut narrow between standing timber.

The HW18DT-BF’s mechanical 3F/3R transmission also means a local workshop can repair it with standard tools, hours from the nearest dealer. For slope and skid-trail duty, again the HW18DT-BF.

Terrain 3 — Plantation Road Building and Bulk Land Clearing

Opening a new oil-palm or rubber block is high-volume push work: long haul roads, overburden moved by the kilometre. Here the HW22D earns its place — 175 kW and a U-blade up to 7.5 m³ move material in volume that the lighter forestry unit cannot match. Use the HW22D for the main haul-road construction and bulk clearing.

But plantation access tracks still wash out every wet season. For that continuous, lighter maintenance between harvest cycles, the HW18DT-BF keeps the side tracks open. Most plantation fleets end up running both: HW22D for the big push, HW18DT-BF for the ground the big machine would churn.

Quick Selection Table

Terrain Recommended Why
Peat swamp / wetland HW18DT-BF 0.067 MPa ground pressure, winch self-recovery
Steep skid trails / slope HW18DT-BF 8-leg canopy, winch skidding, 4,571 mm turning radius
Plantation bulk clearing & haul road HW22D (bulk) + HW18DT-BF (wet-season access) 175 kW / 7.5 m³ U-blade for volume; lighter unit for washed-out tracks

After-Sales and Local Support

High-wear components — track links, sprockets, idlers, rollers, cutting edges, blade pins — are stocked in our Jakarta warehouse. Each unit ships with PDI and test report, Bahasa Indonesia operator manual, first service kit, and 12-month drivetrain warranty. We deliver across Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a bulldozer "forestry" instead of a standard dozer?

Three components a general-purpose dozer usually lacks: a hydraulic winch for skidding and self-recovery, an angle blade for side-casting debris, and an 8-leg logging canopy to protect the operator from falling timber. On the HW18DT-BF these resolve to a 150 kN winch, a 4.3 m³ angle blade, and an 8-leg canopy as standard.

Which bulldozer should I use for peat swamp logging in Indonesia?

The HW18DT-BF. At 17,500 kg on 610 mm tracks it puts down 0.067 MPa ground pressure — below the bearing capacity of most saturated logging ground — so it keeps working where wheeled machines sink. Its 150 kN winch also self-recovers the machine from deep mud.

Can a forestry bulldozer recover itself from mud without a second machine?

Yes. The HW18DT-BF hydraulic winch delivers 150 kN line pull at 20 m/min. The operator anchors to a standing tree and pulls the 17.5-tonne machine out under its own power — no crane, no second dozer, no lost day.

What engine and transmission does the HW18DT-BF forestry bulldozer have?

A Weichai WD10G190E214 engine rated 140 kW (180 hp) at 1,900 rpm, paired with a mechanical shift transmission (3 forward / 3 reverse). The mechanical drivetrain has fewer electronics to fail and can be repaired in a local workshop with standard tools — important hours from the nearest dealer.

Should I choose the HW22D or the HW18DT-BF for forestry work?

It depends on the job. The HW22D (23-ton, 175 kW, U-blade up to 7.5 m³) is the bulk mover for haul-road construction and high-volume clearing. The HW18DT-BF (18-ton, mechanical, 0.067 MPa, winch + 8-leg canopy) is the dedicated logging unit for peat, slopes and wet-season access tracks. Most plantation fleets run both.

What ground pressure does the HW18DT-BF forestry bulldozer have?

0.067 MPa, achieved with 610 mm dry-land track shoes (39 per side, 203.2 mm pitch) at 17,500 kg operating weight. That low figure is why it works on wet, worked-over logging ground where lighter machines sink and heavier machines churn.

Do you supply forestry bulldozers to Kalimantan and other Indonesian islands?

Yes. The HW18DT-BF is built to order for Kalimantan timber and plantation customers, and we deliver across Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. Tell us your ground conditions, skid distances and timber volumes and we configure the winch, blade and canopy package to match.

What after-sales support do you provide for forestry bulldozers in Indonesia?

High-wear parts — track links, sprockets, idlers, rollers, cutting edges, blade pins — are stocked in our Jakarta warehouse. Each unit ships with PDI and test report, Bahasa Indonesia operator manual, first service kit, and a 12-month drivetrain warranty.
